FAMILY and friends of a popular Newport landlady who died after being hit by a car raised £2,000 at a concert held in her memory.

Shirley Lorraine Potts, 50, died after a collision on Clarence Place, Newport, at around 6pm on November 7.

More than 350 people attended a memorial event at the couple’s pub the Waterloo Inn on Nash Road, Newport, which her husband Dave Potts said was testament to how well liked she was.

The event included performances from local bands and soloists including The Elastic Band and Ted Fallon.

The money raised will go towards the installation of a sound system for the hearing impaired at St Mary’s Church, in Nash, where Mrs Potts is buried.

Mr Potts said he was delighted so many people came to lend their support to the fundraiser.

He said: “I am ecstatic, I didn’t expect it to be anything like it was.”

Mrs Potts was on her way to a fireworks party in a taxi with her husband when the couple decided to get out as the taxi waited at traffic lights.

As the pair went to cross the road Mrs Potts was hit.

Lee Powell, 24, of Chepstow Road, was sentenced to seven months in prison on May 8, after pleading guilty to causing Mrs Potts’ death by careless driving.
