CHARITY workers were shocked after vandals wrecked vehicles used by a disabled persons centre.

Employees of the Scope day centre in Cwmbran came to work yesterday to find three of their minibuses with windows smashed overnight.

To make matters worse, the vandals also damaged a window in the Scope centre itself.

The incident means support workers could not collect all of the disabled users of the centre, which gives help for people with spina bifida and cerebral palsy.

The centre often provides the only opportunity for around 60 service users to meet others and socialise.

Judith Crowley of the centre said staff and users were very upset by the “mindless and pointless vandalism”.

She said the users have clubs they were unable to go to on Tuesday as a result of three of their five vans being out of action.

The centre had planned to take a number of people to Usk for the day - plans the team had to cancel.

It is thought the damage could cost the centre in the region of hundreds of pounds.

“We are a good cause supporting people and it is that they have prevented us from doing that today,” she said.

“I don’t understand why they have done it,” she added.

It is not the first time the centre has been targeted by yobs.

In 2005 a garden created by staff and volunteers was wrecked when vandals ripped up plants, smashed paving stones and knocked down fencing.
