A MONMOUTH soldier who died in Afghanistan will be honoured at a service to commemorate soldiers from 1st Battalion the Rifles killed during the conflict.
Rifleman Jamie Gunn, 21, died in Helmand province in February when the Land Rover he was in was hit by a roadside bomb.
He was one of eight riflemen who died during a six month tour of the war-torn country which began in September 2008.
They will be remembered at a special service in Bristol Cathedral on October 21.
Rifleman Gunn's parents Mervyn and Janet, of Drybridge Street, Monmouth, said the former Monmouth Comprehensive pupil died doing a job he had always wanted to do, and described him as “a wonderful son” they loved dearly.
His sister Jessica said after his death: “He was an outstanding brother, very protective and we had a really strong bond. There's just this aching inside now he's gone."
The service at Bristol Cathedral will be led by the riflemen’s commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Joe Cavanagh and the Chepstow Male Voice Choir will perform for the families and friends of those who died.
