A CWMBRAN man was left terrified and shaken after he and his dog were viciously attacked by another dog.

Five-year-old Lakeland terrier Abby suffered broken ribs and fluid on her lungs after a large dog broke free from its owner on Llangorse Road, Llanyravon, at around 8pm on Saturday.

The dog jumped up and bit Glen Burnam's face, leaving him with cuts on his nose and around his eyes.

He let go of Abby and the dog, which Mr Burnam believes was a white American Bulldog, continued to attack her before she managed to escape under a small fence.

As Mr Burnam, 48, of Penrice Green, went after Abby, he saw a woman running off with the dog in the opposite direction.

He said: “I thought she (Abby) was dead. I felt helpless, I couldn’t get the dog off her. It was like a bull with a rag.”

Mr Burnam found Abby in bushes the next day and took her to Cardiff’s PDSA animal hospital where she underwent an operation to treat her injuries.

Vets said she was lucky to be alive and, although she is now at home, Mr Burnam said it was touch and go whether she would pull through.

The father-of three to Scott, 21, William, 18 and Jack, 11, hit out at the dog’s owner and said people should not be allowed to keep dogs unless they could control them.

He said: “It was barbaric, that dog could have killed someone. People should be aware that a dog like that is out there.”

Mr Burnam dialled 999 after the attack and police searched the scene, but did not find the dog or owner.

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said they were investigating the incident.
