RESIDENTS are waiting for work to start on a narrow Penhow lane to prevent large vehicles from getting stuck.
Over the last year, the Argus has reported on how several HGV lorries have got stuck in Policeman’s Lane causing damage to nearby houses after they followed their satnavs.
Newport city council was due to start work on fitting width restrictions in the lane in March.
But having received an objection from one of the residents, the work was put back.
In the meantime, the same house has been hit again.
A HGV lorry became trapped in the lane last month, hitting the house’s outside wall and removing the handrail on the pedestrian walkway to Greenmeadow Drive.
Residents said the incident was reported to the police but the vehicle was not traced.
The owners had only recently rebuilt the wall after similar incidents earlier in the year.
A lorry got stuck in the lane in February while it was delivering roof tiles to a house.
Another lorry was stuck for around four hours after driving down the lane in January and had to be dragged free by a breakdown truck.
Signs warning drivers that the lane is unsuitable for HGVs have been in place for the last 12 months but residents said these are being ignored.
Newport city councillor David Atwell said he has asked the council’s engineer to check the restrictions would not exclude emergency services or refuse trucks and the engineer confirmed these would not.
Cllr Atwell said the work will now start with immediate effect.
