EYE witnesses said tonight that a security guard was attacked and robbed as he called at a Newport supermarket.

Police have confirmed that a robbery had taken place at Tesco, Cardiff Road.

They had cordoned off an area to the left of the main entrance of the store and a security van was inside the cordon along with a silver Volkswagen Golf.

Police were releasing no further details but local people said the security guard had been attacked.

Police and scenes of crime officers were at the supermarket.
