AN ELDERLY woman who died after a head-on collision which closed part of a road for three hours was suffering from severe heart disease, Gwent Coroner's Court heard.
Peggy Mason, 78, from Brecon was driving from Abergavenny to Brecon when her Volkswagen Golf veered into the path of a Ford Fiesta travelling in the opposite direction at around 9.45am on August 11, a Newport inquest heard.
The crash happened outside the Llanwenarth Arms near Glangrwyney on the A40. Mrs Mason, who had been treated for high blood pressure but whose general health was described by son Mason as good, died on August 13 at Nevill Hall Hospital after suffering multiple fractures.
A post mortem examination revealed she died as a result of heart disease with multiple injuries sustained in the crash a contributing factor.
Gwent Coroner David Bowen said there was no evidence of speeding, excessive braking and there were no defects in the car.
He described the collision as unintended and unexpected.
Fiesta driver Claire Saraff suffered a head injury and bruising.
Verdict: Accidental death.
