WITH the build-up to Christmas just around the corner, residents and visitors to Newport can look forward to a sparkling programme of events beginning next month.
On November 22, the streets will be alive with festive activity leading to the big switch-on at 5pm.
Live stage events, festive stalls, street entertainment, Santa and children's activities can be enjoyed between 12 noon and 6pm.
Cllr Glyn Jarvis will switch on the lights with the winner of the Argus Searching for Christmas Stars competition. It will be followed by fireworks and a performance by Newport's popular Big Mac's Wholly Soul Band.
Malarky Arts makes a return to the city centre on the evening of November 26 with their lantern parade involving local schools.
Together with a band of followers, the children will went their way through the city centre for a musical event in John Frost Square where festive food and drink will also be available.
November 28 will celebrate the city's independent traders including a fashion show in John Frost Square.
Other events include the following in Commercial Street.
* an Italian market on December 4 and 5.
* a "green" Christmas including a owl sanctuary, wood sculptor and street theatre on December 12.
* festive music on December 19.
A free park and ride service is already operating every Saturday from the civic centre to Bridge Street. All the council's open air car parks are free on a Sunday.
