THE family of an Undy pensioner have warned others to keep their doors locked after thieves stole his television while he slept.
Donald Peter Gay, 83, was asleep when thieves stole his widescreen plasma television from his lounge sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
This was the only thing taken during the incident.
Mr Gay lives in the converted milking shed at the farm which he moved into in September to be close to his daughter, Heather Bickell, who lives in the nearby farm house.
Mrs Bickell said her father had unfortunately left the door unlocked allowing thieves to get in without causing any damage.
She said: “He’s very cross with himself. He’s able-bodied and is embarrassed he allowed it to happen.”
She said he thought it was a prank at first and was a "lost soul" on Tuesday not being able to watch what he wanted.
Mrs Bickell said it was a momentary lapse and that it was a lesson to everyone.
She said: “We live in a sleepy little village so its been a bit of a wake up call.”
The family have placed a notice on the outside wall asking anyone with information about the burglary to get in touch or to tell the police and also reminding people to lock their doors and cars.
Police said they received a call at 5.50am on Tuesday about a theft from an unsecure flat and are investigating.
Anyone with information is asked to call Gwent Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
