THE CAMPAIGN to save a Monmouth school is over, according to a parent and governor of the school.
Julian Baldock was among those fighting to save Llanover Primary School, one of two schools in the area threatened with closure.
But now, as a report on the consultation carried out on the school is due to be discussed by cabinet, Mr Baldock said the campaign was over and he felt the decision to close the school was rubber stamped.
He said: “I cannot speak for others but as a governor and parent, it feels as if the decision on the school has already been made.
“Although all the information collected from the consultation will still be going to cabinet to try and save the school, there will be no more active protesting.
“I think it is now just the feeling that we want the children to enjoy their time at the school while it is still open and to make the most of the time left there.”
Statutory consultation on the closure of Llanover Primary as well as Govilon Primary ended on October 16 and cabinet members are now due to discuss a report of the consultation results on November 4.
The Local Education Authority will then send its response to the Assembly in February and a decision by education minister Jane Hutt is expected within four to six months.
If she decides to close the schools, they will shut their doors for the final time on August 31 next year.
The proposals to close the schools were put forward to tackle the 400 surplus places at schools in the borough, including nearby Gilwern and Llanfoist.
