It’s Remembrance Day on Sunday and most of us do our bit each year by dropping a few coins into a tin and wearing a poppy.
It just shows that we acknowledge the sacrifices made over the years on many continents by servicemen and women.
However, this year, poppy sellers from the Royal British Legion have been told that they are not allowed to shake their collection tin for fear of being seen as “aggressive”.
Have we really arrived at a place where we are in danger of being emotionally scared by someone with a charity tin?
When faced with a charity person you have two choices, to give or not to give, and providing they don’t threaten you with violence or hit you with a big stick it doesn’t get much more complicated than that.
The problem is that when someone suggests these ridiculous ideas, there isn’t someone else with enough about them to say “oh don’t be so stupid, go away and think of something sensible to say”. We need more of those people before we get to the point where we’re afraid to leave the house.
While we’re talking charity can I just mention Real Radio’s Help For Heroes day next Tuesday.
We are trying to raise funds and awareness for a fantastic charity that’s doing whatever it can to help Britain’s wounded servicemen and women.
Chris Tarrant will be presenting a special show between 9-11am; there’ll be news features all day and the chance to bid on some great auction items. Have a listen if you can.
