PEOPLE living with mental health problems in Blaenau Gwent are getting together with writers and artists to demonstrate the healing power of words and visual art.

The Healing Words project, organised by GARTH (Gwent Arts in Health) and arts groups Head 4 Arts, Academi, and Arts Alive, involves people with mental health issues having the opportunity to express themselves through poetry and art.

And on National Poetry Day, Thursday October 8, they will be presenting the results of their work at Abergavenny's Nevill Hall Hospital in an event combining poetry readings, art and music.

During the summer people at Ysbyty Tri Chwm in Ebbw Vale, Hafal in Llanhilleth and Mentro Allan at Parc Bryn Bach, Tredegar, worked with writers Graham Hartill, Anita Flowers and Mike Church and artists Kate Raggett, Tim Rossiter and Tessa Waite.

Anyone wishing to see and hear the results may attend the event, at the hospital's outpatients hall from 7.30pm-8.30pm. Examples of Healing Words can be found at www.academi.org/south-wales-valleys-literature-development-initiative
