POLICE hope a dumped car will help them catch the robbers who made off with more than £10,000 from a security guard in Newport last month.

Robbers made off with the money outside Tesco at the Harlech Retail Park on Cardiff Road on October 16.

Yesterday, Gwent Police revealed officers found a car in Cardiff which they believe might have been used to flee from the scene and they now need help trying to trace who abandoned it.

A dark blue, five door, Mazda 3, was found abandoned in Clodien Avenue, off Whitchurch Road, in Cardiff, on October 17.

Police said they are not releasing the car's licence plate number at the moment and said no arrests have been made.

The security guard was delivering the money to the store when he was approached by a man wearing dark clothing and white trainers.

It is believed the robber had two or possibly three accomplices.

The guard was pushed to the ground and a box containing the money was taken just before 7.45pm.

He was unhurt but left shaken after the robbery.

It is believed he was working for Group 4 Securicor.

On leaving the retail park the robbers drove towards the Tredegar Park roundabout.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the Clodien Avenue area around the time of the crime, or anyone with information relating to the car or who abandoned it, to contact them on 01633 838111 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
