A CHARITY football match this month will raise money in memory of a Newport man who died from testicular cancer three years ago.
The Shaftesbury team will take on the Civil Service and Real Bettws team at 1.30pm on Sunday, November 29 at Shaftesbury Park in memory of Rhys Griffiths.
Mr Griffiths, of Pilton Vale, Malpas, died three years ago from testicular cancer when he was just 22 and had been a player himself for Shaftesbury Youth AFC.
His best friend, Ryan Johnson, 26, of Brynglas, has organised a memorial match for the past three years in aid of the Velindre Hospital and testicular cancer.
More than 35 players have played in the match every year and this year Mr Johnson is also hoping to organise extra fundraising events such as head shaves, leg waxing and raffles.
He said they have raised around £600 for the hospital in the past but wants to raise a few thousand pounds for testicular cancer and the hospital this year.
Mr Johnson said: “Rhys was a one in a million friend with a great heart. He put up a three year battle with cancer and deserves his memorial match to be in the spotlight.”
Anyone wanting to donate money to the cause should call Mr Johnson on 07525238270.
