Newport made certain of a place in next seasons Heineken Cup when they halted their slide by achieving their first victory in Glasgow last night.
But they left it late, scoring the match winning try in a dramatic finale in the fourth minute of injury time.
It was a terrific effort by a below strength side, but makeshift centre Matt Mostyn swept through for two tries and third choice scrum half Llyr Lane grabbed the last ditch match winner.
The dramatic victory moves Newport up one place to third in the Welsh/Scottish League table, ahead of Cardiff on try count, and with Llanelli losing heavily in Scotland last night against Edinburgh, Newport are now just two points off second place.
Newport injury problems were such that they fielded number eight Andrew Powell on the wing and Wales' lock Ian Gough as flanker.
Despite Newport's dip in form, hundreds of fans again made the trip to Scotland.
Shane Howarth and his young cousin, Calvin, were in opposition at outside half for the first time.
Glasgow attacked from the kick-off with James McLaren easing past Mostyn and finding number eight Jon Petrie in support. Glasgow recycled when Newport were penalised for offside and Calvin Howarth slotted the kick to put them ahead.
Glasgow swept through again, Glenn Metcalfe leading the way and when Newport were caught offside again Howarth obliged a second time. Newport's Forster broke and a Howarth penalty put them in the Glasgow 22 for the first time.
Then Newport struck for two tries in five minutes, both from Mostyn.
Forster again broke clean away and swift handling by the supporting Voyle and Luscombe put Mostyn away for a try that Howarth converted.
Mostyn struck again, this time after a deceptive run by Howarth caught the defence unaware. Howarth again converted.
Glasgow's Howarth then crossed for a try but missed the conversion.
Cousin Sane showed him the way two minutes later when he picked himself up off the floor, after treatment for a head injury, and calmly landed a 35-yard penalty.
Newport were 17-11 ahead at the interval. Glasgow replaced McLaren with Tommy Hayes and Newport's Anthony with Garvey during the interval.
The Scots had early success when Hayes delayed his pass just long enough to enable Kerr to race through for a try.
Hayes converted to give them a one-point lead, Newport made a double substitution, though one of them meant a string of positional switches.
Peter Buxton took over from Gough and the other change involved Andrew Powell going from wing to his familiar number eight spot instead of Joe Powell with Jason Strange coming on at outside half, Howarth moving to fullback and Emyr Lewis to the right wing.
Newport also lost Luscombe, replaced by teenager Scott Williams.
Glasgow stretched their lead to four points when Hayes landed a straight penalty shot. Strange kicked a penalty to narrow the gap back down to one point again.
But Glasgow then struck with their third try when Hayes looped around Kerr to send Reid away on an arching run for a fine try and a 26-20 lead.
That was narrowed by three points when strange kicked his second penalty before Newport replaced Richards with Young as hooker.
In the most dramatic of finishes Newport went flat out for victory. Buxton started it with a charging run and Mostyn nearly broke through again.
But Glasgow gave away a penalty, one of four in a row as Newport each time went for touch and the possibility of a drive-over try rather than taking the kick with the outcome then only a draw.
With time running out it appeared the gamble would fail as Buxton and Forster were held up. But after Howarth was impeded Newports gamble was finally rewarded at the fourth time of asking in the fourth minute of injury time.
Skipper Raiwalui drove one more time for the line and scrum half Lyr Lane was rewarded with the try. Strange's conversion missed, but it didn't matter as Newport had halted their slide to clinch a place in next season's Heineken Cup.
