NEWPORT Rugby Club have failed in their attempt to obtain the release of next seasons's captain Simon Raiwalui for the Principality Cup final a week Sunday.

The Fijian Rugby Union have given Newport a final no over the release of Raiwalui, though they are staging only a trial next weekend for the Epson Pacific Rim tournament.

As they are within their rights under International Board rules, Raiwalui will now fly out on Sunday. "It would have been good to play in the cup final, but it's not going to happen, I've got to go back," said a disappointed Raiwalui.

"Fiji knew I wanted to play, but the coach has had his season to plan and believes it would be in Fiji's best interests for me to go back or others would want the same treatment."

Newport chief executive Tony Brown was less diplomatic.

"Fiji's attitude is diabolically bad," he stormed. "I sent another two-page fax saying how important this was and pleading for his release. But we've had no sympathy at all. It's hugely disappointing for the club and for Simon.

"We are paying all his wages and his air fare and there is nothing coming back.

"Something needs to be done. The Canadian Rugby Union are happy to release Rod Snow.

"Every other club needs to look at this. In view of the attitude of the Fijian Rugby Union we will think very carefully before signing another Fiji player. I hope they need a favour from Newport some time."

Raiwalui is on the bench for tomorrow's league finale at Cross Keys, and Newport also rest skipper Gary Teichmann.

In their absence Newport will be led for the first time by Wales lock Ian Gough. Newport are also keen to give the back row which played well against Glasgow on Tuesday another chance - Joe Powell, Alix Popham and under-21 player Gareth Gravell.

Emyr Lewis, finally back from Wales sevens duty all over the world, is on the left wing while Matt Pini, Matt Mostyn and Andy Marinos return. Scott Mitchell continues at outside half, Shane Howarth's chances of making the cup final described as 60-40 after damaging a shoulder. James Richards is back at hooker and Gareth Taylor steps in for Raiwalui.
