GWENT’S most promising young rugby players headed to Germany yesterday to test their skills against the country’s under 16 national side and raise funds for the Argus-backed Sparkle appeal.

Seventy-six players from the Gwent and Caerphilly district under 15s teams, known as “The Future Dragons”, will spend a week on tour in the South Western city of Heidelberg, where they will play two games against Germany’s best under 16 players.

Gwent's district team will wear shirts displaying the Sparkle logo for the two games the side has scheduled this week, and the team will also try to raise cash for the campaign with a talent competition on Sunday night, as well as money from “team fines” imposed if players are late for breakfast or training.

Sparkle appeal director and coach for the Gwent district team Jon Trigwell said the boys hoped to raise £500 for Sparkle.

The charity's £10 million centre is now in the final stages of being built in High Cross.

When it opens this autumn, it will cater for more than 1,200 disabled children and their families in Gwent.
