JURY members in the trial of a Cwmbran man accused of causing the death of an Usk bank worker heard yesterday the defendant was picked out by at least two witnesses.
Alleged victim Gareth Davies, 26, of Llangibby, suffered head injuries during a fancy dress night out in Cwmbran in the early hours of October 28, 2007. He died two days later.
Aaron Davies, 24, of Barnets, Greenmeadow, denies manslaughter and is on trial at Cardiff Crown Court.
In his closing statement, prosecutor Robin Spencer QC told the jury Aaron Davies was a regular weekend drinker in the John Fielding Wetherspoon's pub in Cwmbran, despite the defendant saying he rarely went out.
The court heard on the night of the incident Aaron Davies was seen fighting with Sam Hosking, Scott Evans and Daniel Davies during the evening and was described as aggressive by several witnesses.
Mr Spencer said Aaron Davies told the court he was “pleased” when he saw police officers at the car park as he thought they were there to arrest the men who had assaulted him, but Mr Spencer said his rib injuries were caused by him rolling around on the ground fighting.
Mr Spencer said: “It’s an anxious case. Here is a young man of previous good character facing a very serious charge. It is equally anxious because there is another young man of equally good previous character who has lost his life.”
Aaron Davies’s counsel, Patrick Harrington QC is expected to give his closing statement today.
Proceeding.
