Newport County players will be honoured this weekend for their efforts in achieving promotion to the Blue Square Premier League.

A civic reception will take place on Sunday to celebrate the club’s success and the players will also tour the city on an open top bus.

Newport’s mayor, Cllr Glyn Jarvis will present a crystal football to the club in recognition of their success this season, which has won them promotion.

The players’ tour of the city will start at Newport Stadium at 11.30am, travel along Corporation Road, Clarence Place and Queensway to the main entrance of the Civic Centre for the reception.

Following the reception, the players will get back on the bus to make their way back to the stadium via Queensway, Clarence Place, Chepstow Road, Somerton Road and Nash Road.

EDITORIAL COMMENT: Cheer our team

WE are delighted that Newport Council has decided to honour Newport County with a civic reception, preceded by an open-top bus tour of the city on Sunday.

The council is responding to public demand in recognising the club's achievement in winning the Blue Square Conference South title with literally weeks of the season to go.

The bus tour starts at 11.30am at Spytty Park and proceeds through a number of streets on its way to the Civic Centre.

It's been a great season and we know that those who run County see it as only the first step on the road to getting back into the Football League.

We hope and expect that thousands of Newportonians, fans and armchair fans alike, will turn out and give the boys a cheer.
