ANGRY residents are appealing against more than 20 allegedly invalid parking fines issued in a Blaenau Gwent street.
Car-owners living on Gwern Berthi Road in Cwmtillery claim around 20 fixed penalty notices, which were given to cars parked in the street on Easter Sunday, were not issued in line with national legislation.
They are appealing against the £30 fines to Gwent Police, arguing the yellow lines on the road are not clearly visible, lines are broken by up to five metres in several places and there are no signs prohibiting parking in the street.
They also argued some cars, which were said to be causing an obstruction because they were parked opposite a bus stop, were not obstructive because no bus services run along the street on Sundays.
Jane Wilkinson, who was one of the residents to be fined, said: "If that lot wasn’t enough, several of the residents who were issued tickets are either registered disabled or have severe mobility issues, which is why they need to park in front of their homes until a partner or relative can move the car for them."
The group has collected the allegedly invalid tickets together and posted them to Gwent Police’s central ticket office last Thursday with a letter of complaint, setting out their reasons for appeal.
A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: "A number of tickets were issued on 4th April relating to vehicles parked on Gwern Berthi Road on double yellow lines, not loading or unloading, not displaying a disabled badge, parking in a bus stop and in some instances vehicles were also parked on the pavement therefore causing an obstruction to pedestrians as well as road users.
"At the moment our central ticket office has not received an appeal against these tickets. Any appeal against tickets is looked at on a case by case basis."
