ALL FLIGHTS from Cardiff and Bristol airports are suspended until tomorrow due to a cloud of volcanic ash moving across the country from Iceland.

Disruption is also reported at Bristol airport as passengers from across the UK face massive delays following the eruption of the volcano in the North Atlantic.

Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports were shut and transatlantic flights from Heathrow and Gatwick were badly affected.

Passengers advised to contact their airlines.

More than 150 flights to and from Heathrow and 108 flights to and from Gatwick were cancelled.

Airport operator BAA said: "Following advice from the Met Office, the National Air Traffic Service (NATS) has introduced restrictions to UK airspace this morning as a result of volcanic ash drifting across the United Kingdom from Iceland.

"These measures currently affect Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports which are closed but may also affect other parts of the UK later today.

"Passengers intending to fly today are asked to contact their airline for further information and should expect disruption in the coming hours.’’ A spokesman for Stansted Airport said 17 scheduled departures were cancelled and the number was likely to rise throughout the day.

The restrictions were necessary because volcanic ash can damage aircraft engines.
