NEWPORT Cathedral’s Emergency Appeal was given another boost this week after Newport big band singer Jeff Hooper announced he would perform a concert in aid of its fundraising effort.
Mr Hooper, who has lived in Bishton for more than 20 years, has previously performed with Welsh superstars Sir Tom Jones and Dame Shirley Bassey, and is now in the middle of a 46-date tour with his band on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing live shows.
His song “Bluebird”, penned by Burt Bacharach's song writer Hal David, is currently the soundtrack behind car manufacturer Skoda’s new TV advert.
But Mr Hooper, who first found fame on TV talent show New Faces, will soon be making space in his busy schedule to perform a concert of swing and jazz hits in Newport Cathedral on June 4.
The cathedral’s emergency appeal is trying to raise £2 million for urgent work needed to the building, including major repairs to the cathedral’s roof and walls.
Mr Hooper, 51, said he decided to organise the concert after discussing the building’s plight with friend and dean of the cathedral Dr Richard Fenwick.
“I wanted to do something to help this wonderful cathedral,” said Mr Hooper, who will also be joined on stage by his singer daughter Alicia. “I’m passionate about the Newport community, and places like this are very important to our lives here in the city.”
Tickets can be purchased for £10 from the cathedral shop, or telephone 01633 212077.
