A NEWPORT community group continued its impressive fundraising tradition with a £900 donation in memory of a former member.

The Maeglas Community Bingo Group has built up a reputation for charity fundraising with the club’s overall contribution estimated to be in the tens of thousands.

Cllr Debbie Wilcox said: "The club has been going for over 20 years. I have been the chairwoman of the centre for six and I know they have raised at least £3,000 a year during my time."

The most recent donation was prompted by the sad loss of one of the members, Olive Clayden. The money went to a group called The Happy Hearts where Mrs Clayden took part in regular exercise following a heart attack.

The money will be used to buy a new defibrillator in Mrs Clayden’s memory.

Money raised by the club is always given to local causes.

Past recipients include the Royal Gwent Hospital, Ty Hafan and the Newport Women’s Forum.

The money is raised with raffles and a small cut of the bingo money.

"We don’t have to look far for real examples of community spirit in our midst.

This is a case of the people with the least giving the most," said Cllr Wilcox.

"The club is not just about bingo but is more of a social group. The club runs on a Wednesday at 7.30 and every time I go down there it’s packed but they are always looking for new members."
