NOW on its third national tour, this high energy show celebrates 50 years of classic music that materialized in the 60s from the Motor City (Detroit) where Motown Records derives its’ name.
More of a concert than a staged musical, the evening is compered by a wise-talking (?) and anecdotal janitor whose only task is to introduce the acts.
Beginning with Motown’s first number one, Please Mister Postman by The Marvellettes, the production builds towards the finale of its title track.. Motown was a prominent force in breaking down barriers around the world and, equally as important, was responsible for producing some of the worlds most influential and enduring songs of the 20th century.
The Dancing in the Streets company manage to recreate the style and music of the stars of the Motown period. They sing their hits, nearly 40 of them and, well, that's it. There's nothing really beyond karaoke performances in period costume. Such a shame there's no history or attempt at social contextualisation given Motown's critical role in bringing black music into the mainstream.
Runs until Saturday May 1st.
