NEWPORT’s beloved medieval ship can now be explored in the comfort of your own home thanks to a new online museum.
The University of Wales, Newport, this week unveiled an interactive 3D version of the Newport Ship.
Using the internet software Second Life users can walk around the ship’s underwater remains and visit a 3D museum telling the story of the ship and mysteries surrounding it.
The museum forms part of the university’s new Digital Heritage Zone in Second Life - an internet world in which participants can explore virtual places and interact with others through a 3D character.
University development director Matt Chilcott said: "This project is an example of the work we are doing here at the university to explore how 3D technologies can be used to help visualise history."
