A GWENT couple who walked from London to Newport in aid of Diabetes UK Cymru raised £2,500 on their 140 mile journey.
Adrian and Katie Sully, from Bassaleg, set off from Trafalgar Square and walked for six days before reaching John Frost Square in Newport.
Mr Sully, 36, was diagnosed with type-one diabetes at the age of nine, and his father Bob and brother Richard also suffer from the condition.
Mr Sully’s diabetes meant the couple had to stop every hour during their six day hike to check his blood sugar levels because the condition means his body cannot control the amount of glucose in his blood.
Mr Sully, who works for the Sports Council for Wales at Monmouth Comprehensive School, said: “We were very unlucky with the weather. We had freezing temperatures, hail and wind. But luckily my blood sugar checks went without incident. If my level was slightly high or low, it would have had repercussions.”
He said the £2,500 raised was much higher than the £1,000 the couple had hoped to raise.
