A NEWPORT woman who has supported the Poppy Appeal for more than 40 years, will be honoured for her dedication at the city council’s Extra Mile Awards.

Vivienne Probert, 80, was out on the streets selling poppies for the Royal British Legion again this year after first joining the organisation four decades ago with her husband Kenneth, who served in the army from 1947 to 1949.

Mrs Probert, of Pill, said she was “proud” to support the charity and says the thousands of poppies she has sold over the years were her way of giving back to the men and women who give so much for their country.

She added she was thrilled with her unexpected nomination, she said: “I had the shock of my life when I had the invitation. I am very pleased and proud. I don’t do it for this type of things, I do it for the soldiers.”

And there is still time to nominate your “unsung heroes” for an award at this year’s event on February 24.

The ceremony will hail the achievements, dedication and bravery of Newport citizens, while also paying tribute to council employees who have gone beyond the call of duty in their work.

To nominate someone send details of why they deserve it; their contact details (including a phone number) and your name and contact details to Laura Doel, South Wales Argus, Cardiff Road, Maesglas, Newport NP20 3QN.

All nominations must be received by Friday, January 28 2011.
