Vista Theatre Company from University Wales Newport transformed the studio space for their production of Blood Wedding. The audience, sat in the round, were transported to sunnier Spain, created by sandy colours, live guitar music and opened with brilliant cheery atmosphere. Based on a true story, Federico Garicia’s Lorca’s play tells of a bride who runs away on her wedding day to be with her lover. Her husband follows and confronts the pair, resulting in the two men killing each other.

This tragic story was infused with the personification of death, darkness and the moon and used brilliant elements of physical theatre to effectively tell this truncated version of the story. The lighting worked beautifully and use of live sound effects emphasised the moods subtly but successfully. The Bride, Bridegroom and Leonardo’s relationships were excellently portrayed and the Servant brilliantly inserted humour into the piece.

This production clearly shows how less can defiantly be more, where simplicity and strong clear voices without hysterics created some fantastic moments. On the whole worked the show worked really well with some fantastic performances from the actors.
