A GWENT midwife is celebrating being named Welsh Midwife of the Year after a nomination from a Torfaen mum-of-two impressed by her round-the-clock support and positive influence.
Geraldine Goodchild's attention to detail, calming influence, and ability to put medical language into layman's terms were, said Paula Harris, vital in helping make complicated pregnancies and births less stressful and more enjoyable.
Mrs Harris nominated Blackwood-based Mrs Goodchild for the Johnson's Baby Mums' Midwife of the Year award in the UK-wide RCM (Royal College of Midwives) awards, helping earn her the Welsh title.
"She has this magical way of making you feel unique," said Mrs Harris, who lives with husband Ryan and children Roan, aged four years, and 14-month-old Robyn.
Mrs Harris required two caesarian sections as both babies were in the breach position. The award nomination followed Robyn's birth.
"Knowing she was on the end of the phone, day or night, was so reassuring," said Mrs Harris.
"Gerry was there from my nine-week booking-in to the caesarian section, every step of the way. She taught my husband and I to relax, trust our own judgement."
"I appreciated her hard work so much, I wanted her to be recognised. It was important to take the time to get her nominated."
Mrs Goodchild said she is honoured by the award and added: "I really value being part of this special time in someone's life and the opportunity to make a positive difference. I'm supported by a wonderful group of midwives who aim to achieve the best for their mums."
