TIME is running out to nominate your Newport hero that has gone that extra mile.

Newport City Council and the South Wales Argus are again calling on city residents to nominate people and organisations who have gone the extra mile.

Like last year, the council wants to hail the achievements, dedication and bravery of citizens at a special ceremony in February.

Many inspiring stories came to light as a result of the first Extra Mile Awards and more than 40 individuals and groups were honoured.

Margaret Went is just one of the people nominated this year for her tireless work for the Newport Festival.

The former ward sister at St Woolos hospital was also a Newport ambassador for the Ryder Cup and through the torrential rain, she still managed to keep a smile on her face, according to Geraldine Went who has nominated her for an award.

But despite her busy schedule promoting the city, she also finds time to help people in distress while volunteering at Newport's Samaritan Centre on Stow Hill and looking after her many grandchildren or great grandchildren.

Mrs Went is now in the running for an award at the ceremony to be held on February 24 at the Hilton Hotel, Langstone, when awards will also be given to council employees who have gone beyond the call of duty in their work.

To nominate someone send brief details of the reason why they are an “unsung hero”; their contact details (including a phone number) and your name and contact details to Laura Doel, South Wales Argus, Cardiff Road, Maesglas, Newport NP20 3QN.

All nominations must be received by Friday, January 28 2011.
