THE charity Afghan Heroes is looking for a regional organiser in Gwent to spearhead a world-wide charitable event to raise money in support of British forces in Afghanistan and hopefully break a world record.

Last year’s Ride of Respect involved a mass motorcycle ride through Wootton Bassett to thank the people of the town for their efforts in support of the war dead. The ride also raised more than £110,000.

Following the announcement that RAF Lyneham would close later this year, the organisers decided to stage the event again - this time involving riders from around the world.

"This is history in the making," said organiser Anne Cole. "We have four or five rides taking place in Europe, three more in Australia, Canada and America, and six in the UK."

Rides will be taking place on April 3 - Mothers’ Day - at the same time as the ride through Wootton Bassett. Organisers hope the rides would break the world record for the largest bike ride ever.

The Gwent organiser would have to arrange and publicise the ride, which would end up at a military installation.

"So far we’ve got 8,000 people registered to take part in the Wootton Bassett ride," says Ms Cole. "We’ve also got over 100 injured troops taking part who want to say good-bye to Lyneham."

Riders may register via www.afghanheroes.org.uk, while anyone interested in organising the Gwent Ride should visit www.rideofrespect.co.uk or contact Ms Coles at blondemoment_17@hotmail.com
