THE NUMBER of empty council houses in Caerphilly has dropped by almost 50 per cent in the past two years.

There are currently 93 empty council properties, down from 190 in February 2009, according to the council.

Cllr Lyn Ackerman, Caerphilly public services and housing cabinet member, said: "This is great news for our council housing tenants, as we have been working hard to reduce the turn-around period from one council tenant moving out of a property to the next tenant being able to move in.

"We are committed to ensuring that our empty council properties have all the necessary maintenance and repair works undertaken as soon as is practicably possible after a council tenant has left, ready for the next tenants to move into, therefore reducing the number of homes standing empty with no occupier."

She added that the council will continue to work hard to further reduce the number of empty council properties in the coming months.
