A FACTORY which provided work for thousands of Gwent people for more than six decades was demolished yesterday.
The Novelis factory in Rogerstone has stood empty since the axe fell on 440 jobs at the plant in April 2009.
The company announced it was holding crisis talks in December 2008 over the factory's future after its order book became a victim of the economic downturn.
Management, workers, the unions and politicians, fought to ensure the plant's survival, but in March 2009, Novelis announced production would cease at the Rogerstone plant.
The factory supplied aluminium sheet and coils to customers in building and construction as well as engineering.
Orders were down 60 per cent and the Newport site was said to be losing £1.5million a month.
