NEIL Kinnock has joined the Labour party's yes campaign for the planned referendum that could change the way we elect MPs.
The former Islwyn MP has joined colleagues Ed Miliband, Diane Abbott, and Tessa Jowell in supporting the move to the new system, known as the alternative vote.
If a ‘yes’ vote is passed in the referendum, planned for May, then the current first past the post system where an MP wins a constituency through a simple majority would be replaced.
Under the Alternative Vote system voters will be able to choose candidates in order of preference.
If no candidate receives 50 per cent or more of the vote, the lowest polling candidate would be eliminated and the votes for that candidate redistributed according to who the voter chose.
Mr Kinnock said: “The alternative vote will increase the power of each vote because every vote in every constituency will have full value.”
