ABERGAVENNY Town Council named councillor Jane Foulser as the new Mayor.

Councillor Foulser is the third woman to be elected Mayor in its 111-year history and will succeed the current Mayor Norma Watkins when she is officially installed in May.

Cllr Foulser, who has been a Town and County Councillor for ten years, was nominated by Cllr James George at a meeting of the Town Council on Wednesday night.

Cllr George said of Cllr Fousler, who serves the Priory ward, that she is an outstanding councillor who has sat on the Town Council for many years, but has never been Mayor.

"She has been a stalwart member of the Town Council for many a long year who is well-known throughout the town along with her husband Bill for all they have done over the years," added Cllr George.

Cllr Foulser, who was elected following a secret ballot, said after the meeting; "I am very much looking forward to it and think it will be a very interesting year."
