A 20-YEAR-OLD Gwent man was sent to a young offenders' institution for the "terrible beating" of a man who told him to stop swearing at a 62-year-old woman.

Chane Davies, of Brynheulog, Blaina, received a 16-month sentence, half to be served on licence, after admitting an attempt to cause grievous bodily harm with intent in the town on the evening of August 3 last year.

A 16-year-old, who cannot be named, also admitted the same charge, and was handed a 24-month youth rehabilitation order involving supervision and 240 hours' unpaid work.

Newport Crown Court was told that 31-year-old Darren Stephens, of Blaina, saw Davies swearing at the woman.

Davies threw a punch at him when he told him to stop but Mr Stephens grappled with him and managed to hold him down.

The teenager then punched Mr Stephens in the face. He curled up on the ground but the pair kicked and stamped on him.

Later the same evening, Davies threw a teenage girl's mobile phone at the wall of her house, smashing it, after her mother asked him to give it back to her.

Arrested the following day, the pair admitted attacking Mr Stephens and Davies admitted an act of criminal damage in smashing the phone.

The court was told Davies was full of remorse for the attack, telling police "I deserve what I'll get."

In a victim impact statement, Mr Stephens said the attack left him scared to go out in the dark and no longer inclined to help people in trouble. Judge Mark Furness told Davies and the teenager the attack left Mr Stephens with "horrible" facial injuries, including the imprint of a shoe or boot on his face. He also had a broken wrist.
