A CWMBRAN fisherman has expressed his anger towards the council at the price it costs to fish in his local boating lake, considering how little fish are left in it.
Ryan Blaney, 38, says it is "disgusting" that it costs £6.50 to fish for a day at Cwmbran boating lake, despite the fact many of the fish died in October 2009, the cause of which is still unexplained.
He says he feels the price set by Torfaen council is far too high with the limited number of fish left and believes fishermen are being treated unfairly.
He said: “It is disgusting. They are ripping people off just to fund their boating lake. They should put fish in there if they are going to charge that amount of money."
Cwmbran boating lake used to contain a large number of bream, carp and roach but the mysterious death of more than 100 fish in 2009 remains unexplained.
Mr Blaney believes this problem has caused a negative feeling amongst the Cwmbran fishing community.
He said: “It is the only lake to fish we have. I have been fishing there for five years, and I usually go twice or three times a week.”
It costs just £5 to fish at the Newport fishery, making the price of a day’s fishing in Cwmbran look even further out of proportion.
A Torfaen council spokesman said: "We need to charge for fishing at the boating lake to cover the costs of maintaining the area. We publicised this when we introduced the charges in January and we feel the amount is reasonable."
