A NEWPORT school is celebrating after gaining top marks at a recent inspection.
Lliswerry Primary School was judged to be a good school with many outstanding features by school inspector’s Estyn, achieving seven grade ones - the highest grades possible.
A report to city councillors said most learners make good and often outstanding progress and had a good attitude to work as they develop clear understandings of what they need to do to succeed.
The report said headteacher Sherry Saunders was an exceptional leader who had, in a very short time, drawn together a very effective and efficient team of teachers and support staff since the junior and infants school amalgamated last year.
The school’s outstanding features include the encouragement of bilingualism, the development of pupils’ entrepreneurial skills and the quality and support of children with additional learning needs.
Inspectors visiting schools in future will use a new grading system, which replaces the system scoring schools on a scale of one to five.
Going forward schools will be rated under the headings excellent, good, adequate and unsatisfactory.
