DOCTORS, lawyers and police officers were among the jobs on the wishlist for pupils at a Newport school.

Pupils at Rougemont Junior School welcomed an array of guest speakers last week, as part of a project looking at the future and jobs.

Teacher Ruth Carol said the school decided to hold a week of activities focusing on what the children wanted to do when they are older, to encourage them to think about their potential careers.

Mrs Carol said: "With the current employment market as it is, we like to encourage the children now, before they have to think about their future. We had around 22 guest speakers, parents and friends of the school, who came in and talked about their own professions and how they chose them. It showed the children that you sometimes make a choice, but have to change it."

Pupils also had the chance to talk about the re-development of the school with Rougemont's business development manager and also the future of the environment.

At the end of the week, the children dressed up as what they want to be when they grow up, including doctors, lawyers, dentists and zoologists.

Pupils also wrote down their predictions of their own futures and buried them in a time capsule in the school grounds, which they will dig up again when they are in their last school year.
