Arguably the height of My Chemical Romance’s fame was during 2006 when they released The Black Parade album, and it’s number one single Welcome to the Black Parade. Since then, things have been quiet and with drummer Bob Bryar recently leaving, it was going to be interesting to see how the band performed.
With two support acts the crowd had to wait a while for the headliners to take to the stage, but when they did the fans came alive. The start to Look Alive Sunshine started playing, the crowd cheered, and the band kicked straight into the first single from their latest album Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, Na Na Na. By the end of the song the audience were buzzing, and eager for more. The band didn’t disappoint.
Front man Gerard Way built a rapport with the crowd from the off, speaking of the band’s last visit here four years ago, and thanking the fans for sticking with the band and coming back.
The majority of tracks were played from the band’s newest album, with the rest of the set a good mix of older tracks. One of the downsides of the gig was that at times the sound wasn’t that great. It sometimes appeared distorted and muffled. Not that the crowd seemed to mind – they just sang along at these moments.
For me, the best reaction from the crowd came when Welcome to the Black Parade and Teenagers were played. The gig was closed by Gerard Way singing Cancer alone on stage. The slowed the pace of the concert right down, providing a ‘lighter’ moment.
The band came back onstage to encore with Bullet Proof Heart.
After this they left the stage, the crowd still wanting more, but sadly it was time to leave and go home. The Romance is still alive.
