A RUCKSACK containing petrol and a rope was set on fire was left on a Pontypool speed camera yesterday morning.
Gwent Police were called to the camera on the A472 near Hafodyrynys at 7.20am following reports of a suspicious package.
The rucksack had a petrol can inside and a piece of rope dipped in the fuel. The rope was set alight but the petrol did not ignite.
A police spokesman described the package as a "crude incendiary device" which was made safe by officers. The camera was not damaged.
Stagecoach bus driver Alan Viner was driving past just after 8.30am when he saw a police van by the speed camera and the package hanging from the camera.
He said: "It looked to be a rucksack with some kind of plastic gallon can. I thought it must be a very suspect package."
The camera, installed in October 2002, is one of seven fixed speed cameras in Gwent operated by Go Safe - the Wales Road Casualty Reduction Partnership.
Anyone who saw any suspicious activity around the camera can call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
