REDWICK village hall’s development group will know next week whether they will get the funding go-ahead to finance the new building.
The nine members are waiting to hear whether they will be receiving around £316,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to replace their outdated 60-year-old hall.
They have already received £200,000 from the Assembly Government for the plans, which were approved by Newport council in November, but the new hall’s fate rests on the lottery funding decision.
In 2009, they applied for a larger amount, but the project was said not to be value for money and it was turned down. Therefore, plans were simplified and redesigned by an architect.
Secretary for the village hall’s development group, Glynis Williams, said it is hoped the new facility will be a community hub, with a meeting room, bar and kitchen.
Around £20,000 of the lottery money will be used to pay somebody to promote the hall and encourage its use by local schools and groups.
The campaign for it began back in 2007, when villagers were summoned to a meeting, as their old building was no longer functional.
Consequently, the village hall’s development group was set up and Mrs Williams said they are eagerly anticipating the funding decision.
She said: “If we do get the get a good result it will be full steam ahead for the plans. We are looking forward to hearing the outcome.”
A decision on the application is expected on May 12.
