Lewis Carroll’s classic tale of a curious girl who follows a white rabbit into a weird and wonderful dream world has captured the imagination of children and adults alike for almost a century and a half.
This week, the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay plays host to Alice - an original reinvention of the classic tale performed by the thrilling Scottish Ballet. Tumbling into an enchanted world filled with extraordinary situations, Alice encounters fantastical characters, from a Caterpillar who teaches the Tango, to the mischievous Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and the menacing Jabberwock. As she adventures through Wonderland, Alice must keep her wits about her if she is ever to escape.
With new choreography by artistic director Ashley Page, Alice is not to be compared to the sentimental version familiar from the animation, but is instead a true tribute to Carroll’s tale, the quirkiness and colourfulness of the original writing perfectly reflected in the clever contemporary choreography and unusual and fantastic characterisations.
Alice, which features brilliant set design from Anthony McDonald and an original score by Robert Moran, performed by the full Scottish Ballet Orchestra, is showing at the Donald Gordon Theatre, Wales Millennium Centre until Saturday.
