THE former Dean of Newport Cathedral was elected Bishop of St Helena in a ceremony at the weekend.
Dr Richard Fenwick was given the title at George Cathedral in South Africa after being elected bishop of the South African province in February.
Around 900 people watched him named the new bishop in a three-hour ceremony.
Speaking afterwards, Dr Fenwick said: “It was a lovely service at the cathedral in George. It had a gloriously African feel to it.”
He will return to Newport briefly before sailing to the South Atlantic to take up his post.
