TELEVISION viewers will get to see whether a chef from Newport can cook his way to the final of a competition tonight.

Hywel Jones is showcasing his skills in the Welsh heat of The Great British Menu, on the theme of ‘cooking for the people’.

On the show, the chefs are asked to use their communities as inspiration for their dishes, demonstrating how food is used to connect people.

The 39-year-old executive chef at Lucknam Park Hotel, in Chippenham, decided to serve venison sausages to Newport High School Old Boys rugby club, where his son is a member.

For the series, he also produced a four-course menu using locally sourced ingredients, including lobster from Cardigan Bay and classic Welsh cawl.

By doing the show, Mr Jones is competing for a chance to cook at a street party at London’s Leadenhall Market, inviting people from his local community.

See how Hywel does on the show on BBC2 at 6.30pm.
