A NEWPORT scout received the highest scouting accolade when he was presented with the Chief Scout’s gold award last week.

Duane Murphy, 14, of Llanmartin, was given the award as testament to his hard work and commitment to his troop.

The 1st Llanmartin scout group member had to complete a series of challenges for badges including fitness, creative, global promise, outdoor, adventure and community.

Some examples of the activities he had to undertake to attain the award include helping to deliver the Christmas post in his local area and undergoing a fitness challenge with his local football team in Undy.

The Caldicot Comprehensive pupil said he was “chuffed” to win the award, presented to him last week by Newport mayor and mayoress Cllr Bill Langsford and his wife Sue, and is the only one in his troop to receive it.

Duane will now represent Newport at the 22nd world scouts jamboree in Sweden this July where he will get the chance to meet hundreds of scouts from around the world.
