MORE than 60 homes could be built on an industrial site in Cwmbran if plans get the go ahead.
Barratt Homes (South Wales) has submitted plans to Torfaen council to build 64 houses on the site known as The Cold Store in Llantarnam.
This is on land next to the new St Joseph’s Meadows site which is currently being constructed by the house builder and is near completion.
This new site, which would be worth around £12 million, would form phase two of the overall development and would include a mix of one and two bedroom apartments and two to five bedroom houses.
Around 20 percent of the houses would be allocated as affordable housing and the houses would be a mix of two and three storeys in height built over the next two to three years. Meetings were held with local residents in March and April over the proposals.
The application also seeks permission to demolish the Cold Store building, improve pedestrian access and create a pedestrian crossing on Llantarnam Road.
A report carried out for Barratt Homes into the present condition of the site found that the site contains 58,000 square foot of industrial accommodation.
This is a mix of steel huts and a building believed to be a former cold store and grain warehouse.
The Employment Land Appraisal found that 41 percent of the site is currently occupied with eight employees but that occupancy levels are set to decrease over time.
It also found that 49 percent of the site, which has been on the market since 2007, was unfit for occupation with many of the buildings beyond economic repair.
