Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford successfully resurrected his Mechanics solo project at Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena with an injection of new life provided by Andrew Roachford and Tim Howar.
Confident and indeed content enough to remain in the background, he paid testament to two very different lead vocalists, allowing free reign with a solid set which was always guaranteed to please the devoted.
Whilst undeniably entertaining, the two approaches for me, were completely at odds with Roachfords soul and feeling for the lyrics almost over-shadowed by Howar's overly exaggerated anthemic performance, more in keeping with musical theatre than with a rock stage.
That said, an eager audience were captivated from the off, and a well-thought programme began with Beggar On a Beach of Gold and Over My Shoulder, followed by Another Cup of Coffee and and excellent take by Roachford on The Living Years.
Genesis fans may have been disappointed by just two offerings, Follow You, Follow Me and I Can't Dance, but the evening didn't belong to nostalgia, with Roachford's own, Cuddly Toy, drawing as big a cheer as any.
The band provided a grand finale with All I Need is a Miracle, and a feeling that a new generation of fans may just be lured in.
