A PONTLLANFRAITH man cycled 200 miles in less than 24 hours in memory of his nephew, who was killed alongside his new wife during their honeymoon.
Michael Meredith, 58, cycled from Anglesey to Swansea in tribute to trainee physio Ben Mullany, 31, who was gunned down in Antigua with new wife Catherine, just over a fortnight after marrying in 2008.
Three years later, their families are still waiting for justice, with uncertainty surrounding the trial date of two men charged with murder.
Mr Meredith called the bike ride “the toughest thing I’ve ever done”, but said such challenges are important to keep the trial in the public’s mind.
He left Bull Bay, Amlwch, at 10am on Monday with friends Terry Maloney, John Cole and Kelston Glover.
They battled wind and rain, cycling through Caernarfon, and Ammanford, arriving in the couple’s hometown of Swansea at 9.45am on Tuesday.
Mr Meredith, who works at the Tesco Distribution Centre in Magor, raised £2,000 for the Mullany Fund. This provides financial assistance to medicine and physiotherapy students, and has patrons including Sarah Ferguson and cricket legend Sir Viv Richards.
He said the last three years were “very difficult”
for his family, saying the charity “keeps us going”.
