STC Musical Society once again pulled out all the stops for their production of Rogers and Hammerstein's, State Fair.
This lesser known musical, origiinally written straight for the screen, proved the perfect vehicle for the society.
Full of rousing choruses and clever choreography allowing them to play to their strengths, it also provided opportunity for some exciting lead performances.
An uncomplicated plot features the competitive and romantic fortunes of the Frake family as they attend the annual local fair.
John Davies was an inspiration as Abel Frake, a role he last played in 2001, whilst Dianne Hayes provided delicacy to the role of his adoring wife Melissa.
Julie Williams. responsible for the robust choreography gave poignancy to her role of Margy, perfectly offset by the exuberance of beau, Pat Gilbert, played by her husband, musical director, Marc Williams.
Kelly Sheppard was confidently sassy as chanteuse Kelly Sheppard, paving the way for some excellent duets with the talented Luke Farley as the eager, yet naive son, Wayne.
A large cast made good use of a stage made exposed by the innovation of moving the orchestra to full view at the back.
The production screams, charm, simplicity and good old-fashioned values, making it impossible to leave without a smile on your face.
It runs until Saturday.
